In honor of celebrating the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future, I thought this was the perfect time to share my thoughts on a board game that really pulled me into this awesome hobby: Back to the Future Dice Through Time (2020), a cooperative game from Ravensburger. It’s designed for 2 to 4 players, and I promise you’ll like it if you’re into teamwork, movie themed fun, and a bit of 80s nostalgia.

How to Play (Just a tiny taste to get you in the mood)
- Each player takes on a version of Marty or Doc, traveling through different times in Hill Valley.
- On your turn, you roll your dices to move, use items, and fix problems in the timeline.
- Everyone works together to return lost items and stop paradoxes before time runs out!

Perfect for movie lovers Fans of the trilogy will love spotting all the callbacks and references. It feels like you’re actually racing across Hill Valley with Doc and Marty.
Teamwork-focused The game really leans into collaboration. You’ll need to coordinate dice rolls, trade cards, and plan actions across different timelines to win.
Engaging playtime A session can take up to 3 hours, but it goes by quickly and makes for a great weekend hangout with friends or family.
What to Keep in Mind
Complexity is lighter On BoardGameGeek, players rank it as medium-to-light in weight. That means it doesn’t have the deep strategic crunch of heavier co-op games like Pandemic Legacy or Spirit Island. For me, that’s actually a plus because it’s more accessible for families, casual gamers, or fans of the movies who just want to jump in. But if you’re looking for something highly strategic, it might feel a little on the light side..
Tiny cards! The cards in this game are really small. I always wanted to do the classic banana for scale, and as you can see in my photo, the cards are tiny… and the banana is tiny too! Hehe.
POV
As the title says, it’s fun, with just the right amount of strategy and has replayability. It’s definitely a must for fans of 80s movies or movies in general. Fair warning: if you haven’t seen at least one of the films, you might not fully get all the references and the theme. One fun tip: set the mood by playing a Back to the Future playlist on Spotify while you game, it makes the experience even more immersive. I love that you have to communicate and plan with your teammates from start to finish, it really keeps everyone engaged. The strategy isn’t heavy, but it’s enough to create that enjoyable sense of anxious excitement as you try to fix the timeline. Plus, the components are top-notch, great quality cards, dice, and the box itself. Classic Ravensburger production values!
