Hey friends! Today’s post is all about Carcassonne, and we’re heading back to the year 2000. This is a true classic and a board game that works perfectly for the whole family, it can even be played with kids as young as five years old, which, if you ask me, makes it a great introduction to this wonderful hobby. Carcassonne is calm, relaxing, and simple to learn, yet endlessly re playable. And if you end up loving it (which is very likely), there are plenty of expansions to explore. Whether you’re new to board games or revisiting a timeless classic, Carcassonne still has a lot to offer, so let’s dive in!

Carcassonne (2000)
Into the game and to the Box
Carcassonne is light in complexity, making it approachable for new players while still offering strategic choices for veterans. It’s designed for two up to five players, though I personally find it works best with two, and expansions allow for more people and added depth. A typical game lasts around 30 to 45 minutes, making it perfect for a casual evening. The game is set in medieval Carcassonne, France, where players build cities, roads, and cloisters while competing to score the most points. Simple to learn but endlessly re playable, it’s a timeless classic that still shines today.
Depending on which version you own, the box contains a nicely illustrated rulebook with examples, five sets of wooden meeples in yellow, red, green, blue, and black (8 meeples per color), a scoring sheet, and sometimes a few small expansions included. Everything fits neatly in the box, making setup easy and cleanup simple. The components are classic, durable, and have that satisfying tactile feel that makes placing each tile and meeple so enjoyable.

How to Play
Setup Place the starting tile in the middle of the table. Shuffle the remaining tiles face down and keep them in a stack within reach of all players.
On your turn Draw one tile and place it next to the existing landscape, making sure all edges match (roads connect to roads, cities to cities, fields to fields). After placing a tile, you may place one of your meeples on it, in a road, a monastery, or a farm in a field… If placing your tile completes a feature, it is scored immediately and the meeples involved return to their owners.
End of the Game The game ends when all tiles have been placed. The player with the most points wins!

Why You’ll Love It
Easy to learn and quick to explain.
Great re playability, with every game feeling a bit different.
Very family friendly and can be enjoyed even with very young players.
Scales well with different player counts.
Calm and relaxing gameplay, making it great for casual and cozy gaming sessions.

Keep in Mind
- Luck can sometimes influence the game, depending on the tiles you draw.
- Interaction between players can feel limited if everyone plays defensively.
- Strategy focused players may find it a bit too light compared to heavier games.

POV
Carcassonne is my go to calm game. For about half an hour, everything slows down, there’s a light, comfortable silence at the table while I’m lost in my own thoughts, planning my next move. Should I extend this road? Grow my city? Place a farmer and hope for the best? It’s thoughtful without being stressful, and there’s something really comforting and cozy about watching the landscape grow tile by tile. For me, it’s a must have in any collection and perfect for relaxed, casual game nights with family or friends.
Until next time, happy gaming!
