Best Co-op Board Games for Couples | Pandemic Hot Zone North America | Fun, Strategy & Replayability
by Eliza
Hey friends! Continuing with the best cooperative board games full of fun and strategy, today’s pick is another title from the well known designer Matt Leacock…

Pandemic Hot Zone North America (2021)
Intro to the box and to the game
In Pandemic Hot Zone North America (there’s also a Europe version, the only difference is the map), you and your partner are trying to stop diseases from spreading across the continent. Hot Zone is the smaller version of the game, with a compact box and quicker gameplay, it takes about 30 minutes. The original Pandemic usually runs an hour or more, with a few extra mechanics that make it a bit more complex. The box, board, and components are all small about the size of a large book!

How to play
Setup Place the board and add disease cubes to cities based on the cards you draw:
- First 2 cities each get 3 cubes
- Next 2 cities each get 2 cubes
- Last 2 cities each get 1 cube
Roles Each player gets a special role with unique abilities. (From my experience, the Medic is a lifesaver but to keep it fair, shuffle and draw roles at random.)
Turn & Infections On your turn, you move around the map, treat diseases, and work toward cures. At the end of each turn, new cities get infected with cubes, so the pressure keeps building.
Winning Cure all 3 diseases before time runs out.
Losing You lose if diseases spread too far or if the deck runs out of cards.

Why You’ll Love It
Quick About 30 minutes of gameplay, perfect for a weekday session.
Small and compact Easily fits into a backpack, so you can take it anywhere.
Affordable Around £15 in the UK, or $20 in the US.
Replayability Different roles and random draws keep it fresh.

What to Keep in Mind
Best for 2 players Even though it says 2 - 4!
Tiny pieces The cubes and cards are small, so watch out for losing them!
Light complexity It’s easy to pick up, but not very challenging if you want a heavier game.
POV
All in all, Pandemic Hot Zone North America is a great little co-op game. Quick, tense, and fun, it’s perfect for 2 players! If you’re just starting your journey into board games like me, I like to think of it as a warm-up for what’s coming next!
