Best Detective Drama Crime TV Shows That Are Comfort Watches With A Touch of Comedy & Perfect To Binge Watch
by Eliza
Hey Friends! In today’s post, I thought it would be a good idea to share with you some of my favorite TV shows that blend mystery-solving crime with a touch of comedy. These are the shows I turn to when I want to be entertained without diving into a book. Unlike many detective and mystery novels, which can be intense thrillers with bits of humor, these TV shows provide a comforting, light-hearted experience. They offer good company, are easy to watch, and let you follow along and solve the mystery at the end. If you love a mix of crime, comedy, and comfort, these shows are perfect for you. Let’s dive in!
Monk
Comedy | Mystery | Drama
Monk The show first aired in 2002 and has eight captivating seasons. Fast forward to last year, Peacock gifted us with a movie, Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, providing the closure we all needed. It reunited the original cast and felt as if no time had passed at all. Now, let’s dive back into the show.
Tony Shalhoub stars as Adrian Monk, a one-of-a-kind detective in San Francisco who developed obsessive-compulsive disorder after the tragic death of his wife. Monk is afraid of almost everything, especially germs, he was sanitizing his hands long before COVID made it a global necessity. The show is hilarious as Monk solves cases with his meticulous, pattern-following mind, often getting dirty despite his best efforts to stay clean. Alongside his assistant and the supportive team from the police office, Monk’s adventures bring a perfect blend of comfort, comedy, and intriguing mysteries.
Monk is one of the very few intelligent series that avoids shootouts, car chases, explosions, weird psycho bad guys, and mutilated bodies. Instead, it thrives on good acting, great plots, and a seamless mix of comedy and mystery. The series strikes a delightful balance, not too dramatic, not overly funny, providing great company and engaging cases that keep you hooked until the very end.
The Closer
Comedy | Mystery | Crime
The Closer starring Kyra Sedgwick as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, debuted in 2005 and quickly became a standout in the crime drama genre. Brenda is a strong female lead who brings tenacity and a unique approach to solving crimes in Los Angeles. Among her team is G.W. Bailey, whose character is a delightful nod to his Police Academy days. Always sporting a white hat when they’re outside, he’s instantly recognizable and brings a charming familiarity to the role. As the gruff yet endearing Lieutenant Provenza, he is the heart of the team, embodying the perfect mix of a moody, grumpy old guy with a hidden, sweet soul that emerges just when you need it.
What sets The Closer apart is its dynamic team and the intricate, well-crafted cases they tackle. The show excels in blending complex crime stories with rich character development, all set against the vibrant backdrop of Los Angeles. With seven seasons, it’s perfect for binge-watching. The writing is top-notch, offering classic mystery elements, clever reveals, and a balance of intelligence and intuition in solving crimes. Each episode skillfully intertwines the police investigations with glimpses into the personal lives of the team, maintaining a compelling balance without becoming overly dramatic. The Closer delivers a satisfying mix of sharp wit, intense investigations, and heartfelt moments, making it a must-watch for any crime drama enthusiast.
Major Crimes
Comedy | Crime | Drama
Major Crimes is a spin-off of The Closer! While the team remains largely the same, the significant change is the promotion of Sharon Raydor, played by the remarkable Mary McDonnell, to Captain. Raydor had made numerous appearances in The Closer, and her transition to the lead role in Major Crimes is seamless and engaging. I loved the show for its cast who brought depth and authenticity to their roles. Their chemistry and teamwork provided a sense of comfort and familiarity that made the series truly special. The show excelled at highlighting the dynamics within the squad, giving each character their moments to shine, which added layers of richness to the narrative.
Despite my desire for more seasons, Major Crimes concluded after six strong seasons. This show, perhaps even more than The Closer, brought me a sense of safety and comfort. The blend of compelling cases, character-driven storytelling, created a series that felt like a warm, reliable companion. What set Major Crimes apart was its ability to tackle serious issues with a touch of humanity and humor, making it not just a procedural drama but a show about people, relationships, and the quest for justice. It’s a series that stands out for its intelligent plots and heartfelt moments, making it a standout in the crime drama genre.
My Life Is Murder
Crime | Comedy | Drama
My Life is Murder is a new and still-running gem that deserves a spot on your watchlist. Starring the ever-charismatic Lucy Lawless as retired detective Alexa Crowe, the show brings a fresh and modern twist to the crime drama genre. Set in Australia, each episode features Alexa being drawn back into solving cold cases with her sharp wit, keen observational skills, and a touch of rebellious charm.
What makes My Life is Murder particularly delightful is its blend of engaging cases and Alexa’s captivating personality. Unlike the often dark and brooding detectives we’re used to, Alexa is positive and happy, balancing life and work seamlessly. In her free time, she bakes bread, adding a unique and comforting touch to her character. The show has a good sense of humor, beautiful location shoots, and an overall fun vibe that makes it very entertaining. I love seeing the Down Under scenery, which adds to the show’s charm. Give it a try, you won’t miss out! My Life is Murder is a lighthearted yet compelling series that keeps viewers entertained and eager for more, proving that crime-solving can be both fun and fascinating.
