In this handpicked selection, you’ll find a spine-tingling collection of dark thrillers, teeming with crime and mystery, where each story unravels with an air of impending doom. What makes these shows truly exceptional is the unique perspective or twist they bring to the crime and mystery genres, leaving a lasting impact on your psyche. So, in case you were looking for something dark and cold as the weather outside for your weekend binge-watching, keep reading.
When They See Us
When They See Us is a deeply emotional and gut-wrenching series that will surely leave you reaching for tissues. With only one season consisting of four episodes, it’s a haunting portrayal of a true story that will stay with you long after the credits roll. It’s a story of the Central Park Five. This true story is set in the late 1980s and follows the lives of five Black and Latino teenagers who were wrongfully convicted of a brutal rape in Central Park.
Watching each episode feels like a grueling journey, and at times, you might find yourself holding your breath, gasping, or even shouting “no, no, no” at the screen. The intense storytelling and exceptional performances make it a truly unforgettable experience.
What sets this series apart is the fact that it’s based on real events, making it all the more heartbreaking. It serves as a stark reminder of the injustices that can befall innocent individuals and the immense strength it takes to endure such a harrowing ordeal.
In the end, when you see the real people whose lives were torn apart by this injustice, you’ll witness their resilience and humanity. They emerge from the darkest depths with a capacity for love and forgiveness that’s truly awe-inspiring. When They See Us is not just a television series, it’s a profound testament to the power of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. Prepare to be moved, angered, and ultimately inspired.
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is not for the faint of heart. With Evan Peters at the helm of this spine-tingling journey into the twisted mind of one of America’s most notorious serial killers, you’ll soon find yourself locking your doors twice, questioning the safety of your surroundings. Peters’ portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer is nothing short of bone-chilling, leaving you with an indelible sense of dread.
The narrative begins with Dahmer’s unassuming life in a tranquil Midwestern town, but what sets this series apart is its unique approach. It skillfully weaves Dahmer’s obsession with collecting exotic butterflies into the storyline, a seemingly innocent hobby that evolves into a disturbing metaphor for his descent into the darkest corners of human depravity.
The series immerses you in the unsettling atmosphere of Dahmer’s suburban home, his disquieting conversations with oblivious neighbors leaving you on edge. It’s a psychological horror masterpiece that invites you to peer into the abyss of a serial killer’s mind, never fully comprehending the depths of his madness.
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story isn’t just another true-crime series; it’s a bone-chilling exploration of the darkest facets of human nature. This is a must-watch for aficionados of true crime and psychological horror—an experience that will continue to haunt your thoughts long after the final episode.
Mindhunter
Mindhunter is without a doubt, one of my all-time favorites. Every time I stumble upon a Reddit post asking for a TV show revival, it’s the first title that springs to mind. Unfortunately, this gem was canceled after just two outstanding seasons, leaving its devoted fan base yearning for more.
The show is based on the 1996 book Mindhunter Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, written by former special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. If you haven’t read the book, I strongly recommend it, it provides a deeper insight into the gripping world portrayed in the series.
The storyline revolves around two FBI agents who kick-start the Serial Crime Unit in 1977. What sets this series apart is its meticulous focus on the in-depth interviews, analysis, and attempts to construct a psychological profile to understand the twisted minds of serial killers and predict their next moves. It’s a dark and intense thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
If you’re a fan of intense drama, crime mysteries, or true-crime stories, Mindhunter offers a binge-watching experience like no other. The brilliant storytelling, meticulous character development, and the eerie glimpse into the world of serial killers make this show a must-watch for anyone with a penchant for gripping and thought-provoking TV. While the show’s future remains uncertain, its existing two seasons are a masterpiece that deserves to be celebrated and revisited. So, dive into the dark, twisted world of Mindhunter and prepare for a thrilling and unique viewing experience.
Painkiller
Painkiller has just hit the screens this summer, marking the latest and most impactful release of the season. This gripping series offers an unflinching look into the true events surrounding the opioid crisis in America, providing a raw and heartbreaking portrayal of the devastating impact on the lives of those affected.
The narrative unfolds as we follow the life of a family man who undergoes a minor injury and is subsequently prescribed oxycodone by his doctor. Little does he know that this prescription will lead to a harrowing journey that ultimately shatters his world and the lives of those he holds dear.
Matthew Broderick’s compelling performance as Richard Sackler adds depth and authenticity to the series, portraying a character deeply enmeshed in the opioid crisis and its ramifications. The story not only serves as a poignant reminder of the human toll of the opioid epidemic but also sheds light on the larger societal issues and the pharmaceutical industry’s role in this crisis. Painkiller is a series that will leave you emotionally moved and more aware of this pressing issue.
For those looking to delve deeper into the opioid crisis and its history, I highly recommend Patrick Radden Keefe’s book, Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty. This powerful work of non-fiction offers valuable insights into the origins and consequences of the crisis, making it an excellent companion for those touched by Painkiller or seeking a better understanding of this critical issue.
