I’ve decided to launch a new series on my blog, one that explores the concept of minimalism. While it may have been a trendy topic on YouTube a couple of years ago, I want to emphasize that minimalism isn’t about indiscriminately tossing out all your belongings, filling your space with monochromatic hues, and labeling it as “minimalism.” It’s so much more than that. In this series, we’ll delve deep into the true essence of minimalism and how it can transform our lives in unique and meaningful ways. Minimalism is about intentional living, simplifying our possessions, and embracing what truly matters. So, join me on this journey as we uncover the beauty of minimalism beyond the surface-level trends.
Today’s theme, as Black Friday is just around the corner, is what NOT to buy. With the hustle and bustle of holiday sales, it’s the perfect time to reflect on our consumption habits and exercise our minimalist principles. Let’s explore how we can navigate Black Friday with intention, making conscious choices about what we bring into our lives. So, let’s begin this journey toward a more minimalist, purpose-driven lifestyle, starting with what not to buy during the frenzy of Black Friday sales.
Disclaimer
- I recommend refraining from purchasing unnecessary items during sales solely because we are influenced by marketing.
- I won’t delve into profound insights, instead, I’ll apply straightforward logic. In my view, my generation has lost its sense of balance when it comes to consumption. So, in this post, I will share my opinions and perspectives on this topic.
New trends
New trends for the sake of short-term happiness. For some, following the latest fashions translates into a fleeting 1-2 months of enjoyment before relegating these items to obscurity in storage, only to discard them five years later. This pattern affects not only the environment but also our own well-being, offering nothing more than momentary joy.
Consider this scenario: I need this new pan, I spotted it on TikTok, and it’s currently at a 70% discount. It’s destined to transform my culinary skills, even though I already own two pans in my kitchen. Those don’t count because they’re not brand new. This pattern prompts a deeper reflection: Why do we engage in this cycle? While I may not be a doctor or scientist, the answer seems to lie in simple logic – true happiness doesn’t hinge on acquiring material possessions.
New Technology
Your inbox is inundated with emails and advertisements, all counting down to the biggest discount of the year. It’s tempting, isn’t it? A new toothbrush, the latest model, with that irresistible discount. Or perhaps a new phone that’s too good to resist. The planet, however, can’t keep pace with this relentless wave of overconsumption. We’re trapped in a never-ending cycle, always craving the next big thing, and it’s high time we reevaluate our priorities.
In this age of constant technological advancement, we’re faced with the paradox of being perpetually connected yet increasingly disconnected from what truly matters. Our lives have become a race to keep up with the latest trends, and in doing so, we may overlook the enduring value of the things we already possess. It’s a reminder that the pursuit of genuine happiness doesn’t revolve around the latest gadget or accessory; it’s found in the meaningful moments and connections that are often eclipsed by the allure of the new and shiny.
New Clothes, Shoes, and Accessories
Don’t we have enough? With wardrobes already brimming, many of us are at the point of seeking extra boxes and wardrobes to accommodate our clothing collections. But why do we still yearn for more, especially during Black Friday?
Black Friday’s siren song of deals can be alluring, but let’s pause to consider why we might opt to resist adding to our already crowded wardrobes.
In the realm of YouTube trends, minimalism has been making waves, with capsule wardrobes being a notable highlight. These wardrobes typically kick off with the suggestion of investing in a high-end, perhaps even exorbitant, wool beige coat. Yet, minimalism isn’t solely about limiting oneself to black, white, and beige color schemes, it’s about embracing the essence of minimal living. However, the focus should be on the quality of materials rather than an exclusive color palette. While sustainable purchases are commendable, they can also be steep in cost. Minimalism isn’t reserved for the elite, it’s a practical approach that can suit various budgets.
Cheaper clothing may indeed have a shorter lifespan, but there’s a world of smaller, sustainable, and affordable brands out there if we take the time to research and deliberate before making a purchase. In doing so, we not only practice conscientious consumerism but also contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle. The value of what we already possess in our wardrobes can be extended through careful maintenance and responsible use, ultimately proving that less can be more.
Seasonal Decoration
As we transition from Halloween to the upcoming Christmas season, it’s a common sight to see stores brimming with brand-new seasonal decorations. But do we truly need to replace our ornaments every year? Is there a household that doesn’t have at least three boxes of seasonal decorations tucked away in the closet? Yet, the siren song of social media continually lures us towards acquiring more, fostering the notion of refreshing our space.
Amid this seasonal decoration frenzy, let’s explore why we might not need to amass more of these ornaments. Beyond the economic and environmental aspects, it’s worth considering the sheer joy that cherished, well-worn decorations from years past can bring. Each ornament may carry its own story and memories, and sometimes, it’s the nostalgia of these familiar adornments that truly infuse our homes with the spirit of the season. We can often find more meaning in a collection of cherished decorations than in an array of brand-new, yet impersonal ornaments.
New Non-Essential Subscription Services
Before considering new subscriptions, take a close look at your current ones and refrain from adding new services that you won’t fully utilize. In many cases, these services come with initial offers, such as the first month for free, but they often automatically renew after the trial period, catching you by surprise if you forget to cancel.
Take the time to review your existing subscriptions; perhaps it’s time to cut back if you’re not actively using them. Remember, even though these are not physical items, they can still impact your finances. So, this Black Friday, consider making it your online noise reduction day – a perfect opportunity to declutter your subscription list and regain control of your expenses.
In wrapping up, for me, minimalism is about more than just decluttering our physical space, it’s about reducing our carbon footprint on this planet. I hope you found some valuable insights in this discussion. It’s essential to remember that these are my personal thoughts and views, shared in the spirit of conversation and self-reflection. Minimalism, ultimately, is a path toward a more sustainable and mindful way of living, and it’s a journey open to all who seek it.
